COVID-19 | Breckles Update

Breckles Group of Companies cares about the well being of our customers, employees and the communities we support. During this trying time our offices remain open as an essential service. However, our physical office is closed to the public. Customer interactions are limited to phone calls and emails.
Here is what we’re doing at Breckles to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19:
• Most of the Breckles staff is working from home.
• Limited employees for essential service remain in the office observing physical distancing.
• Customer service is limited to phone calls and emails. Our office doors are closed and we’re not accepting in person visitors.
• Enhanced cleaning and disinfection for our office.
• Supporting staff request to work from home to take care of family or for those requiring 14 day self isolation.
• Suspending all internal meetings and limiting customer meetings to urgent matters (such as claims)
• We continue to monitor and follow best practices from the Public Health Agency and the Centres for Disease Control.
While this evolving situation is uncertain, you can count on the Breckles Business Continuity Plan to offer uninterrupted service for your insurance needs.
We hope you and your family have found ways to cope with this unusual and trying time. COVID-19 has us all in a state of uncertainty, but it also gives us the opportunity to come together and show the world what Canadians are about. Here is a checklist to help identify cost savings or adjustments to your protections:
☑ Has the amount of KMs you drive to work and annually changed in anyway?
☑ Common discounts that we remind members of: Retiree, Multi Line and Multi Vehicle.
☑ Consider our telematics car insurance program (Save up to 25% for group members, 30% for non-members).
☑ Payment strategy: Do you need to consider a new monthly date to pay for the policy?
☑ Drive one vehicle if you own multiple vehicles.
☑ Increase your deductibles.
☑ Coverage review: What coverage do you no longer need? In some cases, you might need to buy more coverage as this is not the time to take risks. A critical coverage we recommend is water damage protection for your home.

Commercial Insurance Policies do not appear to provide coverage for business owners impacted by the COVID-19 Virus. The reason for this is that Business Interruption is a follow form coverage. In other words, the proximate cause of loss must be as a result of a loss due to AN INSURED PERIL. Unfortunately, in our opinion, an Insured peril would not cover a pandemic, such as COVID-19.
Other coverage sections such as Contingent Business Interruption and Interruption by Civil Authority must be “triggered” from a loss, due to AN INSURED PERIL.
All Commercial Insurers are releasing their position on this exposure as the situation unfolds, and more information will be forthcoming.
